Jio Platforms IPO Subscribed 22 Times: Rs 7.4 Lakh Crore in Bids, Record 13.8 Million Applications Ahead of October 28 Listing

Jio Platforms' initial public offering has closed as India's largest-ever share sale — and one of the most subscribed in the world. The Rs 30,213 crore issue, priced in a band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share, was subscribed 22.19 times overall by the time bidding closed on Friday, October 23, drawing total bids of roughly Rs 7.40 lakh crore including anchor allocations.

The most striking number is not the money but the headcount. More than 13.8 million applications came in, beating the previous global record of 9.73 million applications set by Waaree Energies in October 2024 by nearly 42 per cent. For a single Indian issue, that scale of retail and institutional participation together is unprecedented.

The subscription, category by category

The demand was led overwhelmingly by institutions. Qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) bid 70.55 times the shares reserved for them. Non-institutional investors — typically wealthy individuals and family offices — subscribed 14 times. Retail investors, who had about a third of the issue reserved for them, subscribed 2.72 times.

That split tells the real story of this IPO. The professionals treated Jio as a structural, long-term asset; ordinary investors were enthusiastic but far more measured. The anchor book, opened two days before public bidding, set the tone: 212 anchor investors, including BlackRock, Fidelity, Capital Group, sovereign funds from Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Singapore, and India's Life Insurance Corporation, put in Rs 8,109.84 crore, with anchor demand of more than $25 billion — about 30 times the anchor quota.

Speed matched scale. The institutional portion was fully subscribed within 28 minutes of bidding opening on Wednesday, October 21, and the issue as a whole was fully subscribed in under two hours on its first day.

Why this listing matters beyond Jio

This is the first listing from Mukesh Ambani's Reliance group since 2006, and it values Jio Platforms at up to $108.3 billion. Jio is India's largest telecom operator, and the listing is being read as a test of global appetite for large Indian technology and connectivity assets at a time when markets elsewhere have been volatile.

The IPO even moved the currency market. On October 21, the rupee strengthened to 94.46 against the dollar, helped by foreign portfolio inflows linked to the issue, even as elevated oil prices kept traders cautious. For a market that has fallen for four straight sessions into the weekend, with the Sensex closing Friday at 73,123.83 and the Nifty at 22,600, the Jio demand stands out as a pocket of strong conviction.

What happens on October 28

Shares are scheduled to list on the BSE and NSE on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Retail applicants applied in lots of 12 shares, costing Rs 13,428 at the top of the price band, so many small investors will receive only a fraction of what they applied for — that is the normal arithmetic of an oversubscribed issue, not a problem with any individual application.

Investors watching the debut should remember one caution: heavy subscription is a measure of demand for the issue, not a guarantee of the listing-day price. Large, hotly demanded listings can still open flat or lower if market conditions turn, and this week brings its own risks — the US Federal Reserve meets on October 27–28, and Brent crude remains above $114 a barrel. The listing will therefore be watched as much for what it says about risk appetite as for Jio itself.

The bottom line

By every demand metric — total bids, subscription multiple, anchor quality and application count — the Jio Platforms IPO is a record-breaking issue. Whether it becomes a record-breaking investment depends on what happens after October 28, when the stock must stand on earnings, growth and valuation rather than subscription headlines.
