Social Security COLA 2027 Is 3.6%: Average Checks Rise to $2,170 From January

Social Security's 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) is 3.6% — the raise that lifts the average retired worker's check from about $2,095 to about $2,170 a month starting in January 2027. Around 75 million Americans will see the increase, and SSI recipients will feel it first, in the payment issued on December 31, 2026.

Why is the 2027 COLA bigger than 2026's?

COLA is calculated from the consumer price index for urban wage earners (CPI-W), averaged over July, August and September and compared with the same quarter a year earlier. Inflation ran hotter through 2026 — energy prices surged on Middle East tensions, with Brent crude above $113 a barrel — so the formula produced a larger adjustment than last year's 2.8%.

Will Medicare eat the raise?

Partly, for many people. Medicare Part B premiums are deducted directly from most Social Security checks, and the 2027 premium is set separately. If your premium rises, your net increase will be smaller than the headline 3.6%. The "hold harmless" rule protects most existing beneficiaries from a net cut in their check because of a premium rise, but it does not guarantee the full COLA reaches your bank account.

What should recipients do now?

Nothing is required — the increase is automatic. From late November, sign in to your my Social Security account to read your personal COLA notice, which shows your exact new benefit amount and any Medicare deduction. Beware of calls or messages asking for fees or personal details to "release" your raise; the SSA never charges for COLA.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will I see the 3.6% COLA in my check?

Regular Social Security payments issued in January 2027 include the increase. SSI recipients receive their January payment early, on December 31, 2026, so they see the raise first.

How much more will the average retiree get?

About $75 a month — roughly $2,095 rising to about $2,170. Your own change depends on your benefit amount; higher benefits gain more dollars from the same percentage.

Does the COLA apply to SSI as well?

Yes. The maximum federal SSI payment rises to $1,029 a month for individuals and $1,544 for eligible couples, before any state supplement.
