Primark CEO Resigns Amid Misconduct Allegation – ABF Responds

Paul Marchant, the long-serving CEO of Primark, has stepped down after a complaint was raised regarding his behavior towards a woman in a social setting. The company’s parent organization, Associated British Foods (ABF), confirmed the resignation following an external investigation.

ABF stated that Marchant acknowledged his “error in judgment” and accepted that his actions did not meet the company's expected standards. He cooperated fully with the investigation and has since apologized to the individual involved.

ABF’s Firm Stance on Workplace Conduct

George Weston, the CEO of ABF, expressed disappointment over the situation, emphasizing the company's commitment to respect and integrity.

“I am immensely disappointed. Colleagues and others must be treated with respect and dignity. Our culture has to be, and is, bigger than any one individual,” Weston stated.

He further reinforced that ABF operates with high standards of integrity and that responsible actions are essential for building a sustainable business.

Support for the Complainant

ABF assured that they remain in contact with the individual who raised the concern and have offered her support.

Following the announcement, ABF’s share price saw a nearly 4% drop to £18.64 per share.

Paul Marchant’s Career and Primark’s Growth

Paul Marchant took over as Primark’s CEO in 2009, succeeding founder Arthur Ryan. Before joining Primark, he held leadership positions at major retailers, including Debenhams, Topman, River Island, and New Look.

During his tenure, Primark expanded beyond the UK, opening stores across Europe and the US. The company became a dominant force in affordable fashion, generating £9.4 billion in sales last year—almost half of ABF’s total revenue of £20 billion.

Leadership Transition at Primark

With Marchant’s immediate departure, ABF’s finance director, Eoin Tonge, will step in as interim CEO of Primark. Meanwhile, the firm’s financial controller, Joana Edwards, will take over Tonge’s previous role.

ABF expressed confidence in the new leadership team, stating, “Both executives have the experience to perform these roles well.”

Final Thoughts

Primark remains a leading name in retail, and while leadership changes bring challenges, the company is committed to ensuring ethical business practices and maintaining consumer trust. The retail giant will now focus on stabilizing operations and continuing its growth under new leadership.
